Getting Around the KMC Without a Car
You Don’t Need a Car on Day One
Most PCS moves come with a gap — your POV is on a ship, you’re in a loaner, or you’re still sorting out your USAREUR license. The KMC is more navigable without wheels than most people expect. Here’s how to get around until your car arrives.
The KMC Bus Network (KVG / VRN)
The Kaiserslautern area is served by the KVG (Kaiserslautern Verkehrs-Gesellschaft) regional bus network, which connects Ramstein, Landstuhl, Kaiserslautern, and surrounding villages. Key lines to know:
- Line 102 — Ramstein-Miesenbach to Kaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof (main train station)
- Line 103 — Landstuhl to Kaiserslautern
- Tickets can be purchased on board or via the VRN app

Regional Trains (S-Bahn / RE)
Kaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof is your main hub. From there, regional trains run frequently to:
- Mannheim — 45 min (ICE connections to all of Germany)
- Saarbrücken — 40 min (connections to France)
- Mainz / Frankfurt — 1.5–2 hours
- Trier — 1 hour 15 min

Taxis and Rideshare
Traditional taxis are available throughout the KMC. For the Ramstein area, several local companies operate 24/7. Uber does not operate in most of the KMC area — use local taxi apps or call ahead. The on-base taxi stand at Ramstein is near the KMCC.
Cycling
The KMC has a growing network of dedicated bike paths. Ramstein-Miesenbach and Kaiserslautern both have cycling infrastructure, and the Lauter River trail offers a scenic route toward K-Town. A folding bike or standard commuter bike is worth considering if your commute is short.
Car Sharing and Rentals
AVIS and Enterprise both operate near Ramstein Air Base. Check the Airman’s Attic and Facebook groups like “Ramstein Area Community Board” for short-term car lending among community members — common during POV shipping gaps.
Tips for New Arrivals
- Get a VRN monthly pass if you’ll be carless for more than two weeks — it pays off fast
- Many units have informal car pools for base access during morning rush
- The KMCC shuttle runs between key on-base locations and doesn’t require a vehicle
- Grocery stores in Ramstein-Miesenbach and Landstuhl are walkable from some neighborhoods
