1. Heidelberg
70 minutes south. Park at P12 Kornmarkt garage, walk the Hauptstrasse, take the funicular up to the castle.
2. Trier
50 minutes west. Germany’s oldest city — Roman gates, a cathedral, and the best Christmas market in the region (December).
3. Luxembourg City
90 minutes west. Free public transit, UNESCO old town, strong dollar exchange. One of the safest cities in Europe.
4. Strasbourg, France
80 minutes southwest. The Alsatian old town (Petite France) is genuinely stunning. Park outside the city center and take the tram in.
5. Moselle Wine Valley
60–90 minutes west. Drive the river road from Trier to Cochem. Castle ruins, vineyard terraces, and excellent Riesling.
