Family & Community

Family Life & Assimilation

Schools, healthcare, childcare, spouse resources, and everything that makes life abroad feel like home — for the whole family.

Schools Near Ramstein

Several education options exist for military families — from DoDEA schools on and near the base to German public schools.

Primary Option

DoDEA Schools

Department of Defense Education Activity schools serve military-connected students. Ramstein area has DoDEA elementary, middle, and high schools. Enrollment is handled through the school's registration office — bring orders and student records.

Early Childhood

Child Development Centers

On-base CDCs offer licensed childcare for infants through school age. Waitlists can be long — get on the list as early as possible. Fee structure is income-based.

Local Option

German Kindergarten

German public Kindergarten (ages 3–6) is a popular choice for families wanting cultural immersion. German language exposure can be excellent for children. Contact your local municipality for enrollment information.

Medical & Dental

Primary

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

LRMC is the primary military hospital in Europe, located minutes from Ramstein. Most primary care, specialty, and emergency services are handled there. TRICARE enrollment is required — contact your TRICARE service center upon arrival.

Dental

Military Dental Clinics

Military dental clinics are available on-base. Enrollment in the TRICARE Dental Program covers dependents. Off-base German dentists are also an option — quality is generally high.

Mental Health

Mental Health & Counseling

Military OneSource (free for servicemembers and families) offers non-medical counseling sessions. LRMC also has behavioral health services. The Military Family Life Counseling program offers confidential support.

Note

This is Not Medical Advice

Ramstein Travel does not provide medical advice. For healthcare questions, contact LRMC, your unit's medical office, or TRICARE directly. German healthcare laws and SOFA agreements affect your options — always verify with official sources.

Building Community Abroad

1

Visit the Airman & Family Readiness Center (AFRC)

The AFRC is your hub for transition support, spouse employment resources, deployment assistance, financial counseling referrals, and community programs. Visit early in your assignment.

2

Join the Key Spouse or FRO network

Key Spouse programs and Family Readiness Officers (FROs) connect families within a unit. This is one of the fastest ways to build a support network when you arrive.

3

Explore on-base activities

Ramstein has recreation facilities, clubs, events, and programs. The Outdoor Recreation office rents gear for camping, skiing, and travel. Club memberships and intramural sports are also popular.

4

Embrace local German culture

The Kaiserslautern area is rich with markets, festivals (especially in autumn), local restaurants, and outdoor recreation. Learning basic German — even just greetings — goes a long way with local neighbors and shop owners.

Employment & Support for Spouses

Employment

Spouse Employment Assistance

The AFRC offers spouse employment programs. On-base positions (NAF jobs, AAFES, school aide, etc.) are often available. Remote work for US-based employers is also an option for many families.

Education

MyCAA Scholarships

MyCAA (My Career Advancement Account) provides financial assistance for eligible military spouses to pursue education and training. Programs are available online — research eligibility at Military OneSource.

Community

Spouse Clubs & Groups

OCSC (Officers' Club Spouse Club) and enlisted spouse groups hold events, volunteer projects, and social activities throughout the year. These are some of the best ways to build a friend network quickly.
